Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl was first published in 1861 which led to fame for the writer as her experiences opened eyes across the United States about the horrific life men and women held in slavery were forced to experience at the hands of another. Written under the pen name Linda Brent and edited by noted abolitionist Lydia Maria Child, Incidents has become one of the highest selling memoirs since its initial publication. Jacobs died in 1897.
